Gerontology

By the year 2041, it is projected that over 25% of Canada's population will be over the age of 65. As the world's populations age, so does the demand for professionals with knowledge in this field. Gerontology at Lakehead University is very multidisciplinary as seniors require assistance and advocacy on a range of topics from financial issues to sexuality. Gerontology incorporates elements from the following disciplines:

  • Anthropology
  • Kinesiology

  • Public Health
  • Women's Studies
  • Social Work
  • Philosophy 

As a graduate, you will understand individual and societal influences on aging and their relevance to health and well-being throughout the adult life span. More specifically, you will demonstrate knowledge on the following topics:

  • The aging process from biological, social, psychological and physical perspectives
  • The role of social support and spirituality in well-being
  • Legal issues related to older persons
  • Death and dying issues and ethics
  • Abuse and neglect of older persons
  • Family as caregivers
  • Aging as a developmental process
  • Ethical dilemmas 

We offer the ability to combine your Gerontology degree with a degree in Women's Studies or Psychology. The departments of  Social Work and Sociology also offer Major Concentrations in Gerontology.

Lakehead Advantage

As an Honours student you will be required to complete an Honours thesis in your fourth year, focusing on a particular topic in a discipline of choice. You will have one-on-one access to your supervising faculty member and other resources to complete your research. Ontario High School Students
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);
  • A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average**

*Higher averages may be required for admission to programs in which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the supply of available spaces.
**Admission averages are calculated using the top 6 Grade 12 U or M courses.  

Other Canadian High School Students
 General Admission Requirements: 
  • Completion of Grade 12 and the Secondary School Diploma (see the Program Specific Prerequisites section for your particular provinces requirements);
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average

International HS/ College or University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.) 
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • Equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average (Canadian)

Canadian College
 General Admission Requirements:

College transfer applicants who are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway are eligible for admission consideration if they have:

  • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school;
  • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses; and
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%. 
Canadian University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Attended a university and successful completion of university level course work since leaving high school/college;
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum overall average of C or 60%.
Canadian Bible College
 General Admission Requirements:
  • A minimum overall average of C / 60% or equivalent;
  • College must be accredited by the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE);
  • Successfully meets the minimum program specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12U or M level or equivalent;
  • If not eligible right out of high school, a minimum of two years of full time studies must be completed at the Bible College.

As a first year Gerontology major, you will complete the following courses:

  • Gerontology 1110 – Introduction to Gerontology
  • Gerontology 1130 – Aging in Canada

These courses will examine the aging process through a developmental lifespan study and issues relevant to older people and the society at large. The balance of your courses will include electives from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Science & Environmental Studies.

Expand your knowledge and academic experience overseas through Lakehead University’s Study Abroad Program. In third and fourth year, our students supplemented their studies in places as far as Korea, Singapore and Sweden while gaining transferable credits to be applied to their Interdisciplinary Studies Degree.
