Dr. Monica Flegel's newly-published Pets and Domesticity in Victorian Literature and Culture examines the role played by the domestic pet in delineating relations for each member of the family home, from the couple at the head of the house, to the children who make up the family's dependents, to the common familial "outcasts" who populate Victorian literature and culture: the orphan, the spinster, and the bachelor. Her talk, "Love me, Love my Dog: The Role of the Pet in Victorian Courtship" will draw on one of the chapters from her book.
