Orillia Campus Advisory Committee (OCAC)

TERMS OF REFERENCE

Mandate

The Lakehead University Orillia Campus Advisory Committee (OCAC) will advise the Campus Dean in matters of strategic planning; the development and implementation of short and long-term goals; and will assist the Campus Dean in community outreach and relationship building efforts and the garnering of financial support for education, research and student support within the campus.

Membership

Members of the OCAC are:

  • senior business and community leaders, from the public and private sectors, who are committed to the advancement of a Lakehead University campus in Orillia;
  • chosen to represent a broad range of industry and community sectors; they may or may not be alumni; 
  • selected by the Campus Dean upon recommendation or by the existing OCAC members;
  • asked to serve for a two-year term, renewable upon request of the Dean but usually not for more than two consecutive terms.

Responsibilities

  • provide community and business expertise;
  • ensure alignment with school districts;
  • comment on the campus development plan;
  • advocate for the campus within the broader community;
  • serve as ambassadors and advocates for the campus, sharing their knowledge of campus activities with other members of the community
  • assist the campus in its development efforts.

Potential Activities

  • attend OCAC meetings held four times per year (at least once per semester);
  • provide feedback on Orillia campus initiatives;
  • provide the Dean with community views of Orillia campus;
  • suggest ways of enhancing the campus’ external image;
  • talk to student groups about prospects for employment in member’s field;
  • be involved in recruitment and awareness raising events;
  • arrange opportunities for the Dean or other University officials to speak to community groups on issues of mutual interest;
  • allow profile to be used in University publications and on the university’s web site;
  • work with the Development Office regarding the capital campaign.

The Advisory Committee has the following Sub-Committees:

Government Relations Committee

Mandate

  • to promote the interests of the campus with the Federal and Provincial governments.

Composition

  • appointed by the Dean upon the recommendation of the Governance Committee.

Term  

  • staggered one and two year terms with the possibility of renewal;  the total term inclusive of renewals  should not exceed three years (term limits do not apply to ex-officio positions: Chief of Chippewas of Rama First Nation, MP, MPP, Orillia Mayor, Simcoe County Warden).

Chair  

  • appointed by the committee

Community Relations Committee

Mandate

  • to promote the interests of the campus with the City of Orillia and Simcoe County;
  • to promote the interests of the campus by engaging with local businesses, health care providers, and community agencies;
  • to advise the Dean on issues related to student transportation and  housing.

Composition

  • appointed by the Dean upon the recommendation of the Governance Committee.

Term

  • staggered one and two year terms with the possibility of renewal;  the total term inclusive of renewals should not exceed three years (term limits do not apply to ex-officio positions: Chief of Chippewas of Rama First Nation, MP, MPP, Orillia Mayor, Simcoe County Warden).

Chair

  • appointed by the committee.

Student Experience Committee

Mandate

  • to promote student athletics;
  • to identify and foster volunteer opportunities for students;
  • to  promote the internationalization of the campus and the student experience.

Composition

  • appointed by the Dean upon the recommendation of the Governance Committee.

Term

  • staggered one and two year terms with the possibility of renewal;  the total term inclusive of renewals  should not exceed three years (term limits do not apply to ex-officio positions: Chief of Chippewas of Rama First Nation, MP, MPP, Orillia Mayor, Simcoe County Warden).

Educational Liaison Committee

(added upon the recommendation of the Governance committee)

Mandate

  • to foster mutually beneficial relations with our local educational partners.

 Composition

  • appointed by the Dean upon the recommendation of the Governance Committee.

Term

  • staggered one and two year terms with the possibility of renewal;  the total term inclusive of renewals  should not exceed three years (term limits do not apply to ex-officio positions: Chief of Chippewas of Rama First Nation, MP, MPP, Orillia Mayor, Simcoe County Warden).

Governance Committee

Mandate

  • to review OCAC terms of reference annually and make recommendations for their revision to the Campus Dean;
  • to review the annual performance of the sub-committees and make recommendations for any required modifications to the Campus Dean;
  • to make recommendations to the Dean concerning vacancies when they occur.

Composition  

  • appointed by the Dean
