A number of Canadian universities were represented by teams of undergraduate students to compete in the three-day conference (January 31 to February 2, 2013) that included an accounting-based case competition, guest speakers and networking events.

“The events were enjoyable and insightful, as teams were given opportunities to interact and network with professionals in the field of accounting,” said Lakehead’s Bauer.

Team Lakehead’s second place win earned them a trophy and $1,000 in prize money. The achievement also builds on the University’s recent success at GAAPS (1st in 2011, and 3rd in 2010). “This competition just reinforced the reason why I chose to study accounting, a program that provides you with the skills and opportunities to be successful in any business setting,” said Bauer. GAAPS case competition winners were selected by a judging panel comprised of independent professional accountants.

"I feel that our education at Lakehead prepared us very well for a competition like GAAPS,” said team member, Nick Dzikowski “The program's comprehensive accounting classes helped with the pressure of the first round’s general analysis and financial statement preparation."

Ben Anderson recounts how the final round of the competition was one of the most intense experiences his team had been through since coming to Lakehead. “I think we agreed that we saw sides of ourselves that we'd never seen before, but were also surprised at the quality of our final presentation when given only two hours to put it together,” he added. “It was a nerve-wracking undertaking, but the knowledge that we gained for how to effectively work under pressure was worth more, in my opinion, than winning a trophy for our efforts.”

Taylor Hosanna explained that each of his teammates brought certain strengths to the table and in the short time they had they did an excellent job tapping into those strengths to produce a great presentation.” He said, “Although we all knew each other, it was a completely different experience working together in a stressful situation. I think that we have a culture at Lakehead where the students are very receptive to other students, and this really went a long way to bonding quickly and working together.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, Dr. Bahram Dadgostar, feels the students’ success is an indication of the quality of students in Lakehead’s business program. “We have some of the best and brightest students in Canada, and it’s great to see them doing so well in these case competitions,” said Dean Dadgostar.

The Lakehead GAAPS Team is thankful for the support of the Northwestern Ontario Chartered Accountant Association (NWOCAA).
