Student Accessibility Services invites interested educators and staff to upcoming Accessibility Workshops, which will provide participants with essential training and links.

The workshops are an expansion of available online resources and will highlight how to utilize and apply the resources as we work towards expanding our campus accessibility and achieving the objectives of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013 - Creating Accessible Power Point Presentations

This workshop will cover accessibility features within Power Point. Interested educators and staff will explore the benefits and features of the Accessibility Checker during the creation of Power Point Presentation. All workshops will be offered during the lunch hour. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch. Attendees are requested to register in advance for each session to: atech-sas@lakeheadu.ca

The Gairdner Foundation, the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute and Lakehead University present a lecture by Dr. Philip A. Marsden, co-chair of the Gairdner peer review panels, the Medical Review Panel and the Medical Advisory Board.

The lecture, A Role for Epigenetics in Cardiovascular Disease, will introduce the concept of chromatin-based mechanisms in cardiovascular disease, describe new concepts in gene expression, and provide a newer perspective for how a cell's environment interacts with the static DNA code.

The Gairdner Foundation recognizes the world’s top medical research scientists through its Gairdner International Awards which are selected by an independent Medical Advisory Board and a rigorous nomination process.

Lakehead University graduate students are invited to attend this Graduate Student Teaching Practicum Workshop presented by Dr Jennifer Roth, Associate Professor, Department of Women's Studies, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. Different pedagogical approaches facilitate different modes of education and different outcomes for learners. This workshop will introduce and expand on two pedagogical methods, dialogic and participatory, to illustrate how students can become more involved in their learning and make connections between classroom-based knowledge and 'real world' applications. This workshop contributes towards covering topic ten of the Graduate Student Teaching Practicum, 'Pedagogy Theories'.Register online now.

Description: This course introduces participants to the standards of a trained hike leader, instruction, and risk management for Day Hikes where the hike is no more than 2 km from road access. It also provides direction towards the Wilderness Day Hike Leader, and Wilderness Trip Hike Leader programs and other Hike Ontario programs. Prerequisites: To be eligible to take this course, students must have demonstrated a level of hiking competence and experience including having completed a minimum of five day hikes and present a letter of reference and/or recommendation from a recognized authority (i.e. a certified Hike Leader, a teacher, a hiking club, etc.)
