Language & Styleguide: Dates and Time
Dates
Use cardinal numbers (14, 25, 31, etc.) not ordinals (1st, 2nd, 4th, etc.) when writing the date:
Example: January 19, 2010 (not January 19th, 2010)
Incorrect: The party is on June 26th at 3 pm
Correct: The party is on the 26th of June at 3 pm. or: The party is on June 26 at 3 pm
Time
Do not use periods in am and pm and do not capitalize except for formal invitations such as Convocation programs and Presidential dinner invitations.
Correct: 8:30 pm
Incorrect: 9:30 PM,
- Do not use the 24-hour clock.
- Drop colons and “00” whenever possible.
Example: The game runs from 6 pm to 8 pm. (not 6:00 pm)
